How to Eat Your Way Through Tokyo Gluten-Freehttps://www.travelandleisureasia.com/global/tl-tastemakers/tastemakers-gluten-free-japanese-food-tokyo-dining-guide/2023-12-14T12:11:38+00:00https://www.travelandleisureasia.com/global/?p=149455Tokyo Gluten Free

IF YOU KNOW ANYTHING ABOUT Japanese cuisine (one of the world’s favorites!), you’ll know that, sadly for those with celiac disease or gluten intolerance, much of it is off limits due to the presence of gluten in many common Japanese ingredients. Notable among them: soy sauce, most types of noodles, and sometimes even sushi rice. So, on a recent trip to the Land of the Rising Sun, I took it as a delicious challenge to spend a week finding amazing Japanese food free of or with minimal gluten. Here’s my guide to dining gluten-free (GF for those in the know) in Tokyo.

Otsuna Sushi
Courtesy of Otsuna Sushi

Otsuna Sushi, located in the buzzing district of Roppongi, delivers a wonderful omakase for those avoiding gluten. While not a dedicated gluten-free establishment, with advanced notice the chef can prepare an outstanding tasting menu. Nearly all of the nigiri are adapted with GF soy, and anything that can’t be is replaced. Even the classic chawanmushi steamed egg and dessert were provided. Not too far away in Roppongi, Gluten Free T’s Kitchen offers a whole range of adaptable and allergen-free Japanese food. More than one visit may be required to sample the amount of comforting favorites on offer, including their fantastic deep fried chicken and takoyaki.

Dreaming of jiggly, soft and fluffy soufflé pancakes? Situated in the achingly cool Jingumae district off Omotesando Street, Rizlabo Kitchen is here to deliver, ensuring you don’t miss out on this Instagram-required eating experience. The small kitchen is part of a shared restaurant space on the ground floor of a traditional Japanese house, and they also do crepes on certain weekdays – be sure to check their Insta for the latest. RICEHACK Gluten Free Bakery in the side streets of Cat Street, a small hole-in-the-wall operation, serves a range of delicious curry buns, sausage rolls, bread, baguettes and pizzas to-go (including vegetarian/vegan options); these make for excellent sustenance while touring Tokyo. And tucked away on a quiet lane off well-known Takeshita Street, My Bánh Mì by Gluten Free TOKYO offers a simple menu of sandwich options, also including vegetarian and vegan variations, with a small outdoor-dining terrace providing the perfect place for a light lunch.

Tokyo Restaurants

Another fantastically popular Japanese dish is okonomiyaki, a type of savory pancake containing cabbage and various meat or seafood cooked on a teppan grill. Steps away from Shinjuku train station, the lively Teppan Baby specializes in Hokkaido-style okonomiyaki, which is cooked with yakisoba noodles as opposed to the more commonly found flour batter. While not suitable for celiacs due to the likelihood of cross-contamination, those with mild gluten intolerances may enjoy this dish as they are able to swap the yakisoba for rice noodles (cooked in a separate standalone pot of water).

Sû glutenfree kushi-age

The restaurant (a.k.a Gluten Free Kushiage Su, for googling purposes) in Ginza delivers an exceptional tasting menu of Kushiage, also known as Kushikatsu: skewers of breaded and deep-fried meat and vegetables. This modern and intimate eight-person restaurant is hard to find on the second floor of an anonymous building, however, it is truly unmissable on your gluten-free tour of Tokyo. Multiple courses of intriguing flavor combinations to start lead to wonderfully tender and crunchy sticks prepared before you and served at the counter.

Soranoiro NIPPON
Courtesy of Soranoiro NIPPON

Finally, for those craving the ultimate bowl of hearty goodness, Soranoiro NIPPON is conveniently placed at Tokyo Main Station to energize the weary traveler. Once you’ve located the establishment along “Ramen Street,” you can order from a machine outside the restaurant and choose a bowl of gluten free salt ramen; a deep broth with brown rice noodles, soft chicken breast, and a fudgy-yolked soft boiled egg. Slurping is highly encouraged!

The Best Times To Visit India For Good Weather, Tiger Spotting & Festivalshttps://www.travelandleisureasia.com/global/destinations/india/the-best-times-to-visit-india-for-good-weather-lower-rates-and-festivals/2023-12-12T07:00:17+00:00https://www.travelandleisureasia.com/global/?p=148997best times to visit India

India is a massive country, home to more than 1 billion people. Complex, intricate, overwhelming, and beautiful, there are many reasons to visit the South Asia destination, and many things to consider before booking a fabulous trip.

“India is not only about forts, palaces, and temples; it’s about five-star deluxe properties, delicious food, and the human experience,” says Marion Miller, an India travel specialist with Micato Safaris and a Travel + Leisure A-List Advisor.

That said, Miller also wants travellers to know that there are better — and worse — times to arrive. “India is not a year-round destination,” she says. “Within the timeframe that you travel to India, there are also optimal times; it just depends on where you want to go.” Read on to learn about the best times to visit India, and which stretches of the year to avoid.

Best times to visit India for smaller crowds

With such a tremendous number of residents, plus nearly 20 million tourists per year, you simply have to expect crowds in India year-round. That said, there are times of day when crowds may be smaller.

“When you see [monuments like] the Taj Mahal, visit in the morning. Then it is very calm,” says Miller. “We usually go very early in the morning, around 5:30 am, so that we are the first in line. Then it is less crowded and you can get those famous photos. There are crowds [in India]; you can’t really get away from that.”

Best times to visit India for good weather

Determining the best weather is dependent on where in India you want to visit. The country is the seventh largest in the world in terms of landmass, so the weather can be dramatically different from one part to another.

Northern India has its seasons, just like Europe and the US,” says Miller. “I love October because temperatures are lovely; it’s between 75 (23.8 degrees Celsius) and 85 degrees (29.4 degrees Celsius), with a slight nip in the air, something that says fall is coming.”

[inline_related_article article_id="146862,143193"]

November is the same as October, except temperatures dip a little bit more, between 70 (21.1 degrees Celsius) and 80 degrees (26.6 degrees Celsius). In the northern part of India, you may even need a light jacket by December. Miller says February and March are lovely, too, as spring begins and the flowers start to bloom.

“The south is tropical,” she said. “The coastline, like Chennai, Goa, and Bangalore, will have more humid temperatures, and there is not much difference in temperature there during the year.”

Best times to visit India for lower prices

Between mid-April and mid-September, India has its monsoon season, and temperatures soar up to nearly 110 degrees (43.3 degrees Celsius). If you are looking for travel deals, this would be the time, but it’s also one of the least favourable stretches during which to visit; the extreme heat and torrential rains often deter travellers.

Best times to visit India to see Tigers

A caveat to the above: monsoon season is one of the best times to visit India if you want to spot the country’s majestic resident tigers.

“Tigers are very elusive creatures,” says Miller. “They are beautiful animals, and they are easily seen when it is hot because they are hunting for water. I had an avid photographer visit in April last year and he saw 26 tigers.”

Best times to visit India for festivals

best times to visit India

When it comes to festivals in India, there is never a wrong time, as the country always has a reason to celebrate. Two of the largest festivals in India are Diwali and Holi. The holidays run on a lunar calendar, so the dates change every year, but Diwali is typically in the winter and Holi is typically in the spring.

“Diwali is the Festival of Light,” says Miller. “It’s a lot of lights, people give each other gifts, and it’s also a time where they shoot lots of fireworks into the sky.”

Holi is the festival that welcomes spring. It is a festival of colours, where anyone and everyone throws colourful dye at each other, filling the air, their clothing, faces, and hair with bright, springtime hues.

“There is also Dussehra [usually in October], which is the festival of good prevailing over evil,” Miller says. “Another festival called Raksha Bandhan [usually in August] celebrates the connection between siblings. Plus there are so many gods and goddesses, and they are all being celebrated.”

Worst times to visit India

As to be expected, the worst time to visit India is also the best time to get deals, but you have to consider if those deals are worth the extreme weather. Between April and September, temperatures are extraordinarily high, and monsoons make travelling quite difficult.

According to UNESCO, the first 34 metres (111.54 feet) of this majestic 55-metre (180.44 feet) structure showcases iconic Roman architecture. As one of the most important trade routes in Northern Europe passed through the island of Hiiumaa, there was a requirement for a lighthouse to help mariners navigate their way in the Baltic Sea. Due to claims of ship losses by merchants, the construction of Kõpu Lighthouse was undertaken, which spanned approximately 40 years. After undergoing massive changes since its inception in 1531, a new LED system was introduced in 2020.

Abu Dhabi, not exactly synonymous with Christmas, surprised the world in 2010 by presenting the most expensive Christmas tree in history. Gold is one of the hotel’s signature features, and it’s prominently featured in the Christmas tree’s design. From bracelets and necklaces to watches and other unusually expensive ornaments, the tree is collectively adorned with a stunning array of 181 diamonds, pearls, emeralds, sapphires, and various other precious gemstones. The 10 Best Cities For Winter Experienceshttps://www.travelandleisureasia.com/global/destinations/the-best-cities-for-winter-experiences-according-to-tiktok-and-instagram/2023-12-11T02:00:26+00:00https://www.travelandleisureasia.com/global/?p=147272Winter getaways

More than 150 million Americans use TikTok, while an estimated 1.6 billion are a part of the social media network worldwide. Some 2.5 billion more are sharing photos and videos on Instagram, too. And that gives companies plenty of data to parse through, including finding out which destinations we should all travel to next.

JeffBet, an online casino and sportsbook operator, analysed data from TikTok and Instagram to determine the top 10 cities across the US, UK, and Canada for the peak winter experience. To come to its conclusion, it looked into which cities had the most hashtag mentions, including tags like #WinterInNewYork and #LondonChristmasMarkets.

After parsing the data, the team found that London is the top choice for winter travellers on the social platform.

“London has been crowned as the city with the best winter experience,” the results, shared with Travel + Leisure, read. “England’s capital has almost 71 million winter-related hashtags on social media. For example, #LondonChristmasMarket has 10.9 million mentions on TikTok, and the ‘Big Smoke’ has countless places to visit, from ‘Borough Market at Christmas’ to ‘Christmas in Covent Garden’.”

New York City came in a close second, with some 69 million hashtag mentions across the two social networks. “New Year’s Eve is the most popular hashtag relating to winter in New York,” the findings revealed, with the tag #NYENewYork boasting some 6.4 million mentions and #NewYorkNYE with 1.3 million.

Third and fourth place went to two more UK destinations, Manchester and Edinburgh, respectively. Manchester came in with 25 million tag mentions, with the highest number mentioning its Christmas Market, and Edinburgh came in with 24.1 million mentions shouting out both general winter activities under #EdinburghWinter and its Christmas Markets with #EdinburghChristmasMarket.

Paris rounded out the top five spots with 21.1 million winter hashtags. “France’s capital city is filled with activities, from drinking authentic Parisian hot chocolate to seeing the world-famous Eiffel Tower while snow falls from the sky,” the findings noted. “New Year’s Eve celebrations are quintessential in Paris, with #ParisNYE having 9.9 million hashtags and #NYEParis having 2.2 million hashtags on TikTok.”

As for the rest of the top 10, the sixth place spot went to Vienna, Austria, with 12,881,781 mentions, followed by Berlin, Germany, with a close 12,839,066, Belfast, Northern Ireland, with 8,517,033, Vancouver, Canada, with 7,504,319, and Krakow, Poland in the tenth spot with 7,069,802 mentions.

If, for some reason, your favourite wintertime destination didn’t make the list, that’s OK. You can help it move up the rankings next year by sharing it across your social media channels with the right hashtags. Or, just keep it as your little secret.
