From world-class skiing to rustic charm, Davos has earned its Magic Mountain nickname.

PERCHED IN THE HEART OF the Swiss Alps, Davos is Europe’s highest-altitude city, offering unmatched views of snow-topped peaks, unspoilt valleys and clear blue lakes.

The city has earned the nickname Magic Mountain for its mix of exhilarating winter sports, après-ski fun and Instagram-worthy views.

Ringed by the soaring summits of the Parsenn, Madrisa and Schatzalp mountains, this postcard-like town provides easy access to the region’s best skiing, hiking, and natural scenery.

Parsenn is where the ski culture was born in Davos. Its wide, sunny runs attract skiers of all levels, including families and beginners, while its 12-kilometre downhill run is legendary. The high-altitude slopes ensure excellent snow conditions throughout the season.

Adventure lovers should head to Madrisa’s tree-lined pistes that wind through storybook-style mountain forests. For a blend of the two, set your sights on Schatzalp, where visitors discover a balance of accessibility with a hidden gem feel and a ride up its funicular affords stunning panoramas.

The majesty of the mountains framing this iconic Swiss retreat means that visitors are promised bucolic charm, thrilling outdoor experiences and the area’s famed mountain air.

Aside from skiing, guests visit Davos for its slopeside bars and nightlife, clubs, casinos and extensive entertainment — including The Ice Hockey Spengler Cup and the Art on Ice ice-skating show — all year. It’s also been home to The World Economic Forum since 1971

This winter, it’s time to see firsthand why thousands of visitors return to Davos each year.

Mountain Plaza Hote

For stunning accommodations, guests love the four-star Mountain Plaza Hotel (formerly Hotel Sunstar) for its access to a variety of sporting experiences amidst the Grisons mountains. The hotel is located in a prime position close to the Jakobshorn and Bolgenareal mountains and offers serene relaxation. Hotel Alpina is another four-star option in Davos with a boutique hotel vibe and a focus on chic and trendy restaurants. To experience the highest elevation accommodation in the region, book a room at restaurant-weissfluhgipfel.ch, nestled at 2,843 metres. The rooms might be small, and the hotel is only reachable by cable car from the Weissfluhjoch summit, but the views are breathtaking.

Ice mini golf in Davos

There are endless cold weather experiences to be had in Davos — the hardest part will be deciding which ones to fill your days with in this snowy paradise. Join experts Christian and Markus in elite cold-weather sports workshops that include breathing exercises, focus drills and ice baths. Or try Ice Mini Golf, where 18 holes are played with a field hockey stick and puck on a sheet of ice — the perfect activity for families and friends.

Of course, the skiing in Davos is world-class, and none is better than the new Jakobshorn Summit Run, stretching from the Usser Isch Valley station along the Carjöler ski lift into Bolgen. Reserved only for advanced skiers and snowboarders, the trail will debut this winter season. If you prefer a more competitive day of skiing, try the Parsenn Derby, the oldest popular ski race in the world at 100 years old and considered one of Switzerland’s skiing classics.

However, new skiers need not be scared off by the pros in Davos. It’s easy to learn to ski in the mountain city, and there are plenty of experienced teachers ready to lead you down your first groomed slopes through powdery snow.

To enjoy the outdoors at a more relaxed pace, try winter hiking along 111 km of marked hiking trails. Stroll at your own pace through the pristine white landscape to truly see the area like a local. Snowshoeing is another favourite pastime. Strap on a pair of snowshoes and grab a set of poles to easily glide through the snow.

[gallery ids="139485,139484"]

For cosier fun, book a horse carriage tour that ends with cheese fondue at Teufi Mountain Hut. Choose a 30-minute tour or spend the whole day exploring the terrain from a comfortable carriage before enjoying Switzerland’s most famous dish. You can also savour your fondue in a gondola on the rustic and traditional terrace of Hotel Steinbock.

Boasting epic skiing, new runs, and a vast trail network, Davos is a winter sports wonderland tucked amid stunning Alpine scenery. Ski Parsenn, Madrisa and Schatzalp, then unwind with snowshoeing, winter hikes and fondue. For outdoor adventure and quintessential Swiss charm, Davos is a magical mountain retreat.

Discover the Unexplored Philippines’ Tropical Island Paradise of MIMAROPAhttps://www.travelandleisureasia.com/global/destinations/discover-the-unexplored-philippines-tropical-island-paradise-of-mimaropa/2023-10-31T08:41:14+00:00https://www.travelandleisureasia.com/global/?p=141939MIMAROPA

From beach jaunts in Mindoro Oriental and Occidental to forays into history in Marinduque and Palawan and challenging adventures in Romblon, it’s time to visit MIMAROPA.

THE SOUTHWESTERN TAGALOG REGION of the Philippines, also known as MIMAROPA, features a host of undiscovered destinations — each one a tropical paradise waiting to welcome you.

MIMAROPA is an acronym for the provinces the name represents, including Mindoro Oriental and Occidental, Marinduque, Romblon and Palawan. Within this region are places known for beautiful beaches, relaxing islands, and stunning natural scenery.

Though this area is home to popular spots, including El Nido, Coron, Puerto Princesa City and Puerto Galera, there is also a range of less-known — but no less enchanting — places to explore on your visit to the area.

Nestled into the western corner of the country, it feels worlds away from the bustling hubs of Manila and Cebu. MIMAROPA is an adventurer’s dream come true, where world-class boating, snorkelling, surfing, hiking, and diving are within easy reach.

With unspoilt white sand beaches, unbelievable diving spots, and ancient ruins in lush jungles, this island cluster is beloved by intrepid visitors who visit to experience a vibe not found elsewhere in the Philippines.

Whether you visit for the breathtaking beauty of the landscapes, laid-back towns such as Coron, San Vicente, El Nido in Palawan; Boac in Marinduque; and Puerto Galera, heart-pumping experiences or local culture that is, as yet, untouched by modernisation, every visitor comes away from MIMAROPA with a unique tale to tell.

Read on to discover the top unexplored corners of the region’s provinces.

Oriental Mindoro

Oriental Mindoro is known for pristine beaches and excellent dive sites, but it also contains beautiful waterfalls, indigenous tribes living traditional lifestyles, and mangroves rich with local wildlife. During a visit to the province, you can visit charming villages, learn about local culture, and get into the rhythm of island life.

Puerto Galera is a popular beach town and one of Oriental Mindoro’s best destinations. It’s perfect for scuba diving, with an average visibility of up to 40 metres, diverse marine life, including barracudas, reef sharks and sea turtles, unique night diving opportunities, and the opportunity to explore coral gardens and underwater wrecks that are suitable for beginners.

Puerto Galera is known for lively nightlife in the town centre and on the beaches. The area around Silonay Mangrove Forest is where the most spectacular mangrove forests sit, and several local companies offer enriching tours.

Oriental Mindoro also has a range of lesser-known destinations including Calapan City and San Teodoro. Set your sites on these up-and-coming places if you like your getaways to be calm and quiet.

Tamaraw Falls, Philippines

When venturing inland in Oriental Mindoro, be sure to make a stop at the multi-level Tamaraw Falls. It’s one of the area’s biggest natural attractions, with cascades streaming down a craggy cliff in the middle of an untouched forest and perfect for swimming and picnicking. The falls are about 45 km from Puerto Galera and can be reached by bus or jeepney and a 15-minute hike on a well-marked path.

The Bulalacao Islands of Target, Suguicay, Pocanil and Buyayao are ideal for visitors searching for a destination quieter than Puerto Galera. Discover old-fashioned fishing villages, expansive white sandbars for walking, small huts for camping and a true back-to-nature experience.

Occidental Mindoro

Look no further than the private Pandan Island for a magical and luxurious getaway in Occidental Mindoro. Featuring just one resort and can be accessible via private boat transfer from Abra de Ilog or via fish landing (BFAR) in Sablayan. Pandan Island is loved by couples for its romantic atmosphere and couple-friendly activities, such as plunge pools, fine dining, and a world-class spa.

Though far-flung by most estimations, Apo Reef Natural Park is worth the trip for nature lovers. The protected marine park has an extensive coral reef and dolphins can often be spotted. Once there, visitors enjoy snorkelling in clear waters to see the area’s colourful corals and tropical fish, including schools of angelfish, surgeonfish, and jackfish. For the truly adventurous, try rustic overnight camping under the stars.

Mount Iglit-Baco National Park is another worthwhile destination in Occidental Mindoro. With unforgettable hiking in a protected mountain region dotted with indigenous Mangyan villages, guests are sure to feel, learn, and experience things they have not seen before.

Reaching this area requires a bus or jeepney journey and a hike to reach the trailheads. Once there, treks range from casual afternoon hikes to challenging, multi-day camping endeavours that are best accomplished with hired guides and porters. Along these routes, visitors have reported seeing tamaraw buffalos, families of wild pigs, and cloud rats.

Marinduque

Torrijos White Beach, in the town of Torrijos, is one of the stars of Marinduque. With its powdery white sand — which draws comparisons to Boracay without the crowds and high prices — this is a worthy stop on your next visit to the region. The sunsets and sunrises are colourful, the beach is fringed with palm trees, and swimming conditions are near-perfect. Stay in a rustic beach bungalow and feast on fresh Filipino-style seafood at beach stalls, or take a boat tour to nearby coves, islands, and snorkelling spots.

For an idyllic getaway with off-the-grid appeal, set your sights on Maniwaya Island. With only a few local beachfront huts, most visitors only spend a day on this island, but it is a secluded paradise for those looking to escape it all truly. Explorers can fill their days by hiking to hilltop and island hopping before relaxing with freshly grilled seafood on the beach.

Gasan Church is another draw for fans of history and Spanish-era colonial architecture. Originally built in 1660 by Jesuit missionaries, it’s one of the country’s oldest churches, with a colourfully intricate ceiling mural displaying scenes from Jesus’s life and a unique design that throws patterns from sun beams across the altar. To learn more about the ancient pilgrimage site, an onsite museum details the church’s storied history.

Romblon

In Romblon province, visitors can expect to discover untouched beaches, adventure galore and places to push sporting skills and endurance to their limit.

Cresta de Gallo

If you’re after seclusion, Cresta de Gallo is an ideal choice. The small, remote island is perfect for day trips and camping on the beach under the night sky. With fine sand and clear waters, you’re set to have a great day whether you take in the underwater marine life while snorkelling or beachcombing and take in the area’s unique rock formations with your feet in the waves.

Cantingas River, MIMAROPA

For a more active destination, aim your paddle for the scenic Cantingas River, which twists through lush jungle for incredible views of flora, birds, and colourful butterflies. It also is a premier place for cliff jumping for thrill seekers. At various points along the river, rocky outcroppings create pools perfect for a refreshing dip, while waterfalls provide serene ambience. Trekking along the river’s banks offers a look at rural villages, while crossing the rivers and hopping over boulders provides a challenging workout.

Mount Guiting-Guiting, MIMAROPA, Philippines

If you’re an adventurer looking to push your visit further, Mount Guiting-Guiting is a bucket list destination for many hikers. The steep climb is one of the country’s most challenging but pays off with rarely-seen 360-degree views where the sunsets and sunrises are legendary. Hiring a guide for this mountain is recommended, which provides bragging rites for all that reach its summit.

Palawan

Palawan is one of MIMAROPA’s more famous provinces, drawing thousands annually to El Nido and Puerto Princesa. However, Palawan offers much more for the traveller willing to search further.

Black Island, Busuanga
Black Island, Busuanga. Photo Courtesy of TPB Philippines

Black Island, in Busuanga, has only a few cottages and unusual powdery white beaches that glimmer like gemstones in the summer season. It is where sea turtles like to sun themselves far from the crowds. In contrast to the light-hued sands, dark limestone karst make this luxurious getaway perfect for taking dramatic landscape photos here.

Port Barton is a small fishing village off the beaten path in San Vicente, and travellers rave about its calm atmosphere. It’s an emerging destination with rustic charm. By day, visit waterfalls such as Pamuyan Falls or island hop to swim. Divers will appreciate the chance to visit small shipwrecks and unspoilt coral reefs. After dark, wade into the water to see the bioluminescent plankton.

Another draw to the province for archaeology fans is the Tabon Cave complex in Quezon. Nicknamed the ‘cradle of Philippine civilisation,’ it is thought to have been inhabited 50,000 years ago, and the fossils of The Tabon Man, possibly the oldest Homo sapiens sapiens fossil evidence in Southeast Asia, were excavated. The limestone caves contain a host of wonders, from stalactites and stalagmites to birds and bats, in a striking natural setting.

No matter which province and destinations you choose to visit, your visit to the region will stay with you for years to come. Chasing Smoke and Scenery: Hiking Asia's Active Volcanoeshttps://www.travelandleisureasia.com/global/trips/outdoors/hiking-active-volcanoes-in-asia/2023-10-18T00:00:33+00:00https://www.travelandleisureasia.com/global/?p=140488active volcano

Tired of run-of-the-mill treks and want to take it up a notch? How about hiking to an active volcano? With their fire-breathing peaks and blue crater lakes, from the breathtaking views of Mount Kelimutu in Indonesia to the world’s most perfectly shaped active volcano in Philippines, these treks in Asia promise an out-of-this-world experience.

Technically, an active volcano is one that has had an eruption in the last 10,000 years. They are of two types — dormant (currently calm but might erupt in the future), and actively erupting. From simple walks along steps to full-fledged excursions, active volcano hikes present a unique rendezvous with the earth’s power and beauty. Needless to say, joining a guided tour is the best way to enjoy such hikes. Here’s a list of 10 active volcanoes in Asia that you can hike to, and yes, they are worth sweating it out.

Active volcanoes in Asia

1) Mount Batur, Bali, Indonesia

Situated 1,717 m above sea level, Mount Baturan, an active volcano in Indonesia, is known for its scenic sunrise treks. The journey to the summit typically takes about three hours and is of moderate difficulty. Once you reach the summit and catch the crack of dawn, explore Mount Batur’s steaming crater rims or enjoy a rejuvenating soak at the hot springs near Lake Batur. Mount Batur is a UNESCO Heritage Site and tends to get slightly crowded, with roughly 600 trekkers per day during the peak season. 2) Mount Aso, Kyushu, Japan

One of the more accessible volcanic expeditions is the hike to Mount Aso, home to the largest active volcano in Japan. Located on the central Kyushu island, this volcano boasts five peaks, the highest being 1,592 m tall. It also has one of the largest craters in the world, estimated at 114 km in circumference. Mount Aso’s caldera (formed due to the inward collapse of a volcano) is inhabited and can be crossed by road or railway. The mountain’s pastures are used for dairy farming and cattle raising. Among its biggest calling points is the steaming cyan crater lake nestled in the Nakadake crater of the volcano. The easy hike takes under 30 minutes, and promises breathtaking views. Inside, don’t miss the Aso Shrine, dating back over 2,000 years. Additionally, the caldera also has mineral-rich hot springs, onsens, a museum, and a visiting centre. To learn more about the current restrictions and access hours, head to Mount Aso’s official website.

Mount Bromo, an active volcano in Indonesia, is nestled inside a massive crater called the ‘Sea of Sand’, a protected reserve. Its most recent eruption was in 2011, and white ribbons of sulphurous smoke still gust out of its crater every day. The volcano is particularly famous for its sunrise trek, one that culminates with arresting views that are second to none. On the way, if you tire out, you can opt for a jeep or horseback ride to reach the crater. Moreover, the hikers are given surgical masks as they near the crater, because the ash gets thicker near the summit. The volcano is located 2,329 m above sea level and requires roughly 30 minutes of hiking.

6) Mount Merapi, Central Java, Indonesia

active volcano in indonesia

Touted as the most active volcano in Indonesia, Mount Merapai translates to ‘mountain of fire’, and has erupted regularly since 1548. While its conical shape bears a resemblance to Mount Fuji in Japan, it’s not as tall. The crater at Mount Merapai’s summit sits approximately 2,930 m above sea level and usually takes four to six hours to reach. The trek is physically demanding owing to steep inclines and loose rocks. While the volcano is notorious for erupting every two to three years, it’s surprising that the population density around the volcano is 690 people per sq km. If you dare to bite the bullet and scale this hike, rest assured that the views of Mount Sindoro, Sumbing, Lawu, and Merbabu will enchant you.

Calling all seasoned hikers! Mount Rinjani, an active volcano in Indonesia situated 3,726 m above level, enthrals with unmatched views of the region, as seen above a carpet of clouds. It is the second-highest volcano in Indonesia and can be scaled in about five days. This is a relatively difficult trek, and we recommend taking a certified guide along with you. As you climb the mountain, you can catch the unique sight of smoke spewing out of Mount Barujari, an active volcano. Along the same trekking circuit, explore the surreal crescent-shaped lake, Segara Anak, which translates to ‘Child of the Sea’. Previous eruptions have yielded a small new cone within the same crater, called Gunung Baru, which means ‘New Mountain’. Additionally, the crater houses a natural hot spring that you can explore.

9) Mount Fuji, Japan

active volcano

At 3,776 m above sea level, Mount Fuji is Japan’s highest mountain. The climb — which ranges between five to 10 hours based on the route you take — is easy, barring some steep slopes in between. The complete route is divided into 10 stations, with the first one being at the foot of the mountain, and the last one at the summit. There are roads until the fifth station that support vehicles, and from there, the hike begins. The journey is complemented by mountain huts, paid washrooms, food kiosks, stalls selling canned oxygen, and wooden hiking sticks, among other articles of use. There are also abundant signs of assistance along the way to guard hikers against gusty winds, falling rocks, etc. The only challenge, however, is that the air gets considerably thinner as you gain altitude.

Perched 1,639 m above sea level, Mount Kelimutu offers larger-than-life views of three brightly coloured volcanic lakes. These are known to change their colours and shift from blue, green, and black to even red sometimes. The hike to the summit is hardly 20 minutes. However, if you wish to trek further, there is a 10-km track between Moni to Mount Kelimutu. We recommend carrying a flashlight if you’re trekking back post-sunset.

My Green Adventure: How I Chased The Northern Lights In Norwayhttps://www.travelandleisureasia.com/global/trips/outdoors/how-to-chase-the-northern-lights-in-norway/2023-10-17T09:00:56+00:00https://www.travelandleisureasia.com/global/?p=140462Northern Lights Norway

Cosying up in a glass cabin and sleeping under the Northern Lights has always been on my bucket list. So, when we finally booked our tickets to Tromsø, Norway, my husband and I casually joked about how we would struggle to fall asleep under the shimmering green aurora in Northern Norway. Turns out, we were mistaken about every aspect of viewing the Northern Lights in Norway.

What is the best time to see the Northern Lights in Norway?

The optimal time to see the Northern Lights above the Arctic Circle is between late September and late March. We specifically chose late September, when the days are sunny, the skies clear and the temperature is comfortable (we are not used to brutal winters). Nevertheless, Norway’s weather can be unpredictable, so the longer you stay, the better your chances.

Moreover, the Northern Lights activity tends to be much more intense during the equinoxes — Spring Equinox (March 21) and Autumn Equinox (September 23). While the aurora borealis is visible from late August, it is the equinox that gives this cosmic light show an extra boost often producing some of the best activity. Of course, it’s impossible to exactly predict when you can see the dancing lights – but there is something about the equinox that auroras seem to love.

Do Northern Lights hotels and resorts guarantee aurora sightings?

It was nearly 12 pm when we landed in Tromsø from Oslo, Noway. The sky was a mystical shade of sky blue (I was secretly smiling as I knew that clear skies increase the chances of aurora sightings). We had booked a stay at a cabin in Malangen Resort, one and a half hours outside Tromsø city. We picked up our rental car from the airport (Europcar) and navigated through the scenic road punctuated by bridges, tunnels, and mighty landscapes.

Norway Road Trip

Malangen is on the edge of civilisation, known for panoramic vistas and aurora sightings. With the hope of seeing the electric green fury while relaxing in the hot tub, we ended up spending two hours outdoors. The Arctic sauna was sure an unrivalled experience with the views of icy glaciers in the backdrop. After a delicious dinner in the resort, we waited in our cabin for the aurora to show up. We also played some old classics and filled the wine glasses. And before we could tell, we fell asleep (no aurora yet!).

Malangen Resort, Norway

After enjoying a wholesome breakfast, the next morning, we started our journey back to Tromsø. During our leisurely drive back to the city, we were rewarded with majestic mountains, plunging waterfalls, and panoramic sea views. No matter which way we turned, there were breath-taking vistas, begging for a pitstop.

Where to see the Northern Lights in Norway?

Tromsø sits 69° N right in the centre of the aurora zone and is hence the best place to see the Northern Lights in Norway. That evening, we had arranged for the “Northern Lights Chase” tour with local company ‘Polar Adventures‘ in Tromsø. However, I received an e-mail late afternoon that our tour would be cancelled due to unfavourable weather conditions. Yes, it was rainy, cloudy and windy in Tromsø. But given our limited three-day stay in the city, we were not ready to put all our eggs in one basket.

Tromso, Norway

We spoke to some local tour operators in the city who were still running the tour despite harsh weather conditions. There, we learned there is always a 50 percent chance of a sighting on any given day during the season. We were lucky to find two vacant seats with another company, ‘Arctic Voyages‘. The ‘Northern Lights Chase’ tour approximately costs NOK 1400 (USD 128) per person.

Our first indication that this would be more of a hunt was when the guide informed us that the weather was not going to be in our favour that night. The tour would run from 8 pm until 3 am to increase the chances of our sighting, but we would have to drive to the Finnish border.

What causes the Northern Lights?

As soon as we settled into the black bus (our home for the next seven hours), our guide Manek gave us a rundown on what causes these mysterious light shows. Northern Lights occur when the electrically charged particles from the sun smash into Earth’s magnetic field. When funnelled down to the magnetic poles of the northern and southern hemispheres, this ‘solar wind’ creates green, red, and blue particles that shape-shift over the Arctic Circle. The phenomenon happens constantly — all you need is cloud-free skies and darkness to see them.

[inline_related_article article_id="3391,1904"]

The level of activity is, however, indicated by the planetary K index or Kp. The Kp index ranges from 0 to 9. If the Kp index is between 0 to 2, the aurora is dim in intensity. For Kp in the range of 3 to 5, the aurora is brighter. For Kp in the range of 6 to 7, the aurora is pretty strong. We also installed the ‘My Aurora Forecast’ application that shows activity levels in the current location and the best locations to view the Northern Lights in real-time.

What no one tells you about the Northern Lights sightings

Northern Lights, Tromso

I kept looking outside the window, thinking maybe I’d see some activity. However, I quickly realised that that’s exactly why it’s called a “chase”. The number of times our tour guide used the term “chasing lights”, and emphasised the word “hopefully”, was enough to make me worry. We spent the next three hours seemingly driving away from the city lights (that cause light pollution and make it impossible to get a sighting) and cloudy skies before we crept up on the Finnish border in pursuit of clear skies. As the night grew colder, we drove further into Finland. Around 11:30 pm, our guide spotted some stars in the sky, and we took a break from driving the endless array of dark roads (and occasional rain). With our spirits high, we zipped our jackets and stepped out of the bus.

The experience was surreal and restorative. Holding my husband in the middle of the deepest night, I realised that finding the lights wasn’t the magical part. It was this journey that mattered. Just as I started to thank my stars, my eyes caught sight of the many bright stars in the night sky.

Camera settings and more…

Northern Lights, Tromso

After 15 minutes, we started seeing faint green trails in the sky. Now, here’s a fun fact that you may not have known until now! Interestingly, the camera picks up the lights ten times better than the naked eye. So, the many photos that you see on social media are inherently misleading — because of the lens’ superior power to capture them.

We, however, had our cameras (with night sky settings) and tripods ready. The only way you can get a decent photo is by using a tripod. I had no idea how to use a tripod or the night-sky setting on my Android phone. Manek was sweet enough to give us a tutorial on the bus. Shooting the Northern Lights is just like shooting stars, where you need a correct long exposure. It should ideally be between 2 to 30 seconds so that you capture more than your eyes can see. You must then adjust the shutter speed and aperture to capture the Northern Lights.

Suddenly Manek said, “Hey guys! it looks like there’s some Northern Lights out here!” Beyond excited, we wiggled around. I always imagined that Aurora Borealis would dazzle the lights out of me. But all I could see was faint streaks of light in the sky. We clicked the night sky only to discover a gorgeous shade of green adorning the sky that was not visible to the naked eye. Manek was right, they looked like greyish-green clouds, but they were still bright enough to illuminate the mountains.

Northern Lights, Tromso

About 15 minutes into it, they gave us hot chocolate which largely helped my numb fingertips get back to life. We got back on the bus, assuming the chase was over. However, Manek informed us that we could wait for another 15 minutes as the activity was getting stronger. We decided to walk a little further down the road and discovered that the Northern Lights usually run East to West. Suddenly, the lights got stronger, appearing, and disappearing at random. I attempted to take pictures with my phone and could see them! I kept staring into the sky, secretly thanking the universe for the magical night!

The second chase and the dancing lights

The next day, we booked another tour, with the hope of a better sighting (you see, it never seems enough). We joined Manek on the tour along with many other new tourists and some old ones. Luckily, that day, the sky was clear. We had to drive just for an hour before we could find a spot (without any light pollution). Manek also explained that we were going to head to a location that was showing some Northern Light activity. I was a little confused when we stopped in what seemed like the middle of nowhere surrounded by pine trees. But, as soon as I heard the “woahs” from everyone outside the bus, I decided to hurry up and get my layers on.

[inline_related_article article_id="1076,1077"]

There, in the middle of the dark, was the Aurora Borealis which looked like the ones in the pictures. Then they soon disappeared, and they appeared again after an hour and started dancing. They looked like a silky green ribbon being waved around in the sky. They were moving fast, and I had no idea when they disappeared completely and never showed up. Auroras can go from zero to hero within minutes and vice versa.

The Northern Lights are unpredictable and the weather in the Arctic can change in the blink of an eye. So, whenever you plan that Northern Lights trip, make sure to have a few days in hand to chase the aurora. You never know when you will get lucky.

Why Japanese Hell Power Walking Is Our New Favorite Exercisehttps://www.travelandleisureasia.com/global/destinations/200-km-away-unzen-onsen-nagasaki-kyushu/2023-10-16T01:51:45+00:00https://www.travelandleisureasia.com/global/?p=140202Unzen Onsen

If you haven’t been to Unzen Onsen, near Nagasaki, you’re missing out on one of the hottest under-the-radar towns in Japan. Come with us to this little spot in Kyushu, where the bubbles blurb, the ancient pines tower, and the tomatoes are served singularly and cold. It’s primal healing through hot lava.

200 KM Away

IT’S 7 A.M. IN Unzen Amakusa National Park, about 50 kilometers from Nagasaki on Kyushu, the southernmost of Japan’s four main islands. I’m half asleep still but somehow power-walking with a group of tracksuit-wearing Japanese strangers over a volcanic landscape that’s burping gaseous steam and bubbling gray mud. Our guide’s morning enthusiasm is high—and borderline criminal.

This wasn’t just basic power walking. It was Jigoku style—Hell Power Walking! Fitting, since the network of snakelike boardwalk trails was the only thing separating me and my powerwalk posse from scalding hot steam vents and hissing fumaroles fed from a lava lair deep below us. One snoozy misstep and it’s sayonara.

In Japan, these volcanic areas are aplenty and often called “Jigoku” (hell). What made Unzen’s so different was its almost electric-green lushness and, as I would later learn, its dedication to nature, with sign-posted trails listing local flora and fauna.

To be honest, 7 a.m. power walking isn’t my normal jam. I’m more of a last call for breakfast kind of guy. But I’d been on the road in Japan for a few weeks overindulging nightly on marbled yakiniku, sake, and 7-Eleven snacks, which I began referring to as “R&D,” and it was turning me soft and plump. So I was grateful for the chance to burn off some fat and partake in some onsen and wellness, which Unzen is all about.

The sleepy microtown itself is home to about a dozen restaurants, thankfully none of them like the smokey sake dens I’d been hanging out in. I walked up and down the town’s main drag in about 10 minutes and wondered what I would do there for two nights. A few shops sold onsen eggs, local yuzu koshu paste and numerous salts and lotions. There were refreshingly no tourist buses or groups anywhere in sight, an increasingly hard find in Japan.

[gallery ids="140186,140188,140187"]

Earlier, I’d checked in at the Hoshino Kai Unzen (from JPY13,000 per person per night), a 51-room hotel that opened in November of 2022 and is decorated with stained-glass art, a reminder of the region’s Christian heritage. It overlooks the spectacular volcanic landscape. The hotel’s acid sulfuric onsen water, rich in acidic hydrogen sulfide, was a highlight. I disrobed and stepped into my private balcony onsen, where I soaked before dinner while watching the steam puffs rise and evaporate into the sky like ghosts. Later at their public onsen, a basalt pool surrounded by ferns and trees, I watched the lanterns reflected in the rippling water and listened to melodic and piercing bird calls echo from the surrounding forests. I could feel myself sinking into a state of deep relaxation— the kind of state you don’t realize you need to be in until you’re in it.

[gallery ids="140193,140198"]

There’s something magical and healing about these volcanic areas. I felt it on Etna, in Iceland, and on Hawaii. Knowing that a tsunami of orange molten lava could cascade into town any minute adds an excitement to the drudgery of the everyday, but also makes you appreciate the delicacy of life.

It also makes food taste amazing. The restaurant choices in Unzen are limited, but what I had was outstanding. At Kai, I feasted on lobster and beef shabu shabu made with a daishi of flying fish broth and daidai, a bittersweet local citrus that burst with flavor thanks to the lava. Simmered whelk, a pot of spongy pumpkin tofu, and a slab of dense foie gras with dried persimmon rounded out the meal. Visits to local joints were also rewarding. At Kinugasa Cafeteria I ordered hiyayakko, a cold block of mineraly tofu garnished with black soy, fresh ginger, katsuobushi flakes, and spring onions. I also ordered a single cold tomato, which turned out to be a highlight—lightly salted, bursting with tomato flavor, and carved ornamentally into a rose.

Manmyoji Temple
Manmyoji Temple. Photos by Adam H. Graham

Best of all were my hikes in the area, home to several trails including one starting at Manmyoji Temple, dating back to 700 AD. Along the trail were 88 moss-encrusted statues and three needled pine trees, rumored to have been first planted here by famed monk Kobodaishi, who brought Buddhism to Japan in the 9th century AD. Another brought me around aquamarine Oshidorino Pond, where Daikokuten Magaibutsu (a stone carved Buddha with mysterious and allegedly ancient origins) is etched into a giant rock. I walked the sun-dappled trail for a few hours one quiet spring afternoon and enjoyed it all to myself.  There was nothing hellish about this Jikogu. But maybe sometimes you need to go to hell to truly reach heaven.

Siargao is the holy grail of Philippine surfing, and a place often frequented by Hollywood celebrities that love the sport. Renowned for the legendary Cloud 9 break, this island paradise is characterised by powerful barrel-style waves. The coast’s right-hand reef break, particularly during peak season from September to November, provides a canvas for daring and unforgettable rides. Surfing this destination is a bucket-list item for many surfers and tests even the world’s most athletic boardriders.

Cloud 9 is also home to the Siargao International Surfing Cup competition, drawing pro surfers from around the world each year.

The beach is known for big waves powered by offshore winds and high tides — conditions attracting intermediate to expert surfers as well as brave beginners. Siargao also boasts stunning turquoise beaches and hidden lagoons that are perfect for exploring after your surfing sessions.

There are a host of stylish surf camps, bohemian surf shacks, and luxury resorts — where guests can partake in services including massages tailored to surfers and photoshoots to commemorate their adventure  — in the area alongside a range of surf schools and board shops.

Aside from amazing waves, tourists can anticipate good accommodations and unique local restaurants. Even movie star Ryan Gosling has been spotted riding the waves in Siargao.

For those in search of a more chill surfing getaway and the opportunity to learn new skills at one of many surf camps and schools, the gentler waves of Aurora province’s Baler — and Sabang Beach, in particular — offers an ideal mix of fun in the sun and wave-riding opportunities.

With a rock-free and sandy bottom, this beach is forgiving for first-timers, offering a soft impact no matter how often you tumble off your board. Though the beach offers consistent waves throughout the year, October to April bring in offshore winds that result in optimal conditions.

Sabang Beach has earned a reputation as a welcoming surf spot where beginner and intermediate surfers can catch challenging waves under the tropical sun. Local and international surfers can even spot stars on the boards beside them — Francis Coppola has been known to catch the breaks in Baler. The peaceful atmosphere in the town, shaded by the majestic mountains nearby, makes it a perfect place to vacation as well.

La Union

For beginners looking for a mellow immersion into the world of surfing, booking a stay in La Union, a laid-back town known as the surf capital of the north, is perfect. The town is also just a few hours’ drive from Manila.

The picturesque and crescent-shaped San Juan Beach is known for its crumbly break and peeling right-point break, drawing comparisons to surfing conditions in Southern Australia.

With consistent waves and year-round swell, peak season is usually from October to April but can shift depending on when the monsoon arrives each year.

San Juan Beach lies at the heart of La Union’s surf culture, boasting beginner-friendly waves and patient instructors guiding newbies in catching the beautiful barrel waves crashing along the shore. However, La Union is not a destination only for beginners. Nearby breaks, such as the formidable Monaliza Point, allow advanced surfers to challenge themselves too.

After you’ve put away your board, the town is home to a vibrant local scene full of eclectic cafes, beachfront restaurants, live music, local shopping and stunning sunsets. The vibrant community and laid-back atmosphere make it one of the best spots for surfers to visit with friends, families or partners that don’t surf.

Hang Tight And Jump High: Explore The World's Ultimate Bungee Destinationshttps://www.travelandleisureasia.com/global/trips/outdoors/best-places-for-bungee-jumping-around-the-world/2023-10-02T07:00:11+00:00https://www.travelandleisureasia.com/global/?p=138348Bungee Jumping

Whether you’re an adrenaline junkie or someone looking to break free from their comfort zone, there’s something incredibly exhilarating about falling down amidst lush valleys, with a mesmerising waterfall as the scenic backdrop. Thinking of bungee jumping, isn’t it?

Surprisingly, even people with acrophobia, a fear of heights, have found themselves beaming with joy after bungee jumping. A Bangalore-based startup owner shared his experience adding that it was a ‘leap of faith’ for him. He said that though he was shivering before the activity, he was sure about it and completed it like a pro.

So, whether you are hesitant to take the plunge or excited to go for it, this guide to the best bungee jumping spots and essential tips might be just what you need.

What is bungee jumping?

Bungee jumping involves a free fall from a high place while a person’s feet are tied to one end of a rope or rubber cord called bungee, the other end of which is anchored to the site of the jump. After initially falling headfirst for a specific duration, the jumper bounces back as the cord rebounds.

According to Britannica, the Oxford Dangerous Sports Club, inspired by reports of the Pentecost Island divers, made the first Western bungee jumps. New Zealand was the first to commercially offer bungee jumping to the public in 1988.

Things to remember while planning your bungee jump

No matter how excited you are before your first bungee jump, a touch of nervousness is natural. To ease those nerves and ensure a stress-free experience, here are some key things to keep in mind. And don’t forget to get photographed and filmed!

Book in advance: As slots keep filling fast, it is best to make a prior booking as early as possible to avoid last-minute chaos.

Choose your operator wisely: Research thoroughly and opt for a certified operator. While the risk is minimal, it is always good to be careful.

Pick a breathtaking location: Decide between mountains, water bodies or forests to enjoy gorgeous vistas while taking the plunge.

Consider your health: Avoid bungee jumping if you have ankle, back or neck injuries. People with heart conditions, high blood pressure or vertigo should consult their doctor before trying this adventure sport.

Don’t overeat: You may feel nauseated or throw up after a heavy meal. So, opt for something light.

Share the thrill: While most adventure enthusiasts would want to try it solo, doing it with your special someone or a friend is a different experience altogether.

Dress comfortably: Wear breathable clothes that are neither too tight nor too loose. Secure your hair properly.

Carefully watch the briefing video: Most organisers take jumpers through a briefing video to familiarise them with the experience. It is advisable to watch the video properly to avoid any mistakes.

Practice breathing exercises: It is good to inhale and exhale slowly to keep yourself calm and composed before the free fall.

Don’t overthink: The most important thing is to avoid overthinking and to remain confident. You’ve got this!

Best time to do bungee jumping and cost

Bungee jumping is best experienced when the visibility is clear and the weather is pleasant. Ideal times include the winter months from November to February in warmer regions and the summer months of April to June in colder areas. Monsoons should be avoided, as most bungee jumping organisers do not operate during the rainy season.

The cost of bungee jumping varies depending on the location, jump height and safety measures. In the US, expect to pay about USD 400, while in New Zealand, prices range between USD 150 and USD 275. In the UK, it can cost between GBP 50 to GBP 190 (USD 62.64 to USD 238.05).
