The Ritz-Carlton Maldives, Fari Islands, Sustainable by Design

Brought to life through cutting edge architecture and philosophy at The Ritz-Carlton Maldives, Fari Islands.

The Importance of Sustainability is paramount to The Ritz-Carlton Maldives, Fari Islands and through its iconic design, led by Kerry Hill Architects, guests arrive to villas that boast pioneering cross-laminated timber using pre-fabricated design methods and materials. The supply chain for these sustainable construction materials can also be traced back to their origins. Where possible, natural breezes are harnessed to cool public spaces, and highly-sophisticated glazing limit the use of air-conditioning. This, alongside the widespread use of solar panels, the intrinsic sustainability of materials used, the low‐maintenance natural weathered finish all collectively achieve a low carbon footprint.

Each villa’s design allows for total privacy, cocooned by clean sweeping curves and lines. All bedrooms look out to the horizon through panoramic sliding doors that dissolve the barrier between inside and out, with a curved deck and private pool merging into the ocean beyond.

Interior design takes on a bold yet simplistic approach to detailing with a limited palette of natural materials and color hues that offers a stunning contract to the bright turquoise hue of the Maldives ocean. Furniture, rugs and fabrics were customs designed by Kerry Hill Architects, drawing influence from local craft traditions in collaboration with Maldivian and international artists.

Responsible Foundations

The property developed with minimal impact on coral reef and marine life

The property developed with minimal impact with coral reef and marine life Constructed on an existing sandbank within a shallow reef at the edge of North Male Atoll’s Northeast rim, the property sits in a delicately balanced area rich with marine life. The owners of the hotel commissioned a marine team to study the oceanographic conditions and provide guidelines to ensure the sandbank was developed with minimal impact on the coral reef and spawning time was avoided.

In the center of the island, guests will discover a 30-meter Banyan tree adopted from Medhukumburudhoo Agricultural Island in Shaviyani atoll, dedicated to the late Kerry Hill. Guests can also expect reusable glass water bottles in all villas, restaurants, spa, and luxury transfers in a pledge to reduce single-use plastic. Filled with still or sparkling drinking water from the resort’s dedicated water-filtering plant.
