A week paddling through prehistory? Sign us up. Exmouth Adventure Co. specializes in off-grid adventures, and this one took our intrepid science writer into a whole other realm in Western Australia.

#journeys

WHEN YOUR THEME IS HOW JOURNEYS can make the trip itself, life is a dream to receive a pitch like this:

I’m at this moment about to head to the airport for another kayaking trip. This one is fully offgrid. It’s with Exmouth Adventure Co., but this one is off Karratha, an area that very few tourists visit as it’s more of an industrial hub. This tour is brand new, I’m on the second trip ever. The trip starts with an Aboriginal induction of  Murujuga, one of the most significant rock art sites in the world, with thousands of carvings known as petroglyphs; they’re approximately 30,000 years old.

Kayaking

This area is currently up for World Heritage listing. The islands offshore are completely wild and untouched, and we’ll be paddling for five days, expedition camping across four different islands, bringing all our food and water and camping gear in the kayaks. Whales, turtles, sharks galore, coral reef snorkelling. I thought maybe it was too remote, too adventurous? But if you do want a story, let me know early Monday morning as I’ll be out of range after that! Here’s an image to show you what it’s like. An extraordinary land and seascape!

Too adventurous? No! You must report back! Our resident science writer, Australia-based Carolyn Beasley, went off-grid for a week in Western Australia, in the Dampier Archipelago, and returned with some truly envy-inducing imagery and daily tales of awe. Yes, they were working hard paddling those kayaks all day, but they were also being treated to Exmouth Adventure Co. gourmet meals and the joys of spotting ancient art and swimming in the wild with trevally and rays.
