Whether you’re travelling solo or with your family, the last thing you want on your mind is to be concerned for your safety. Visiting a destination that’s safe is of utmost importance, and you must check this list of the safest countries in the world for 2023 before planning your itinerary.

The report by the Institute of Economics and Peace is known as the Global Peace Index. It is an annual ranking of the world’s safest destinations, “calculated using 23 qualitative and quantitative indicators from highly respected sources, and measures the state of peace across three domains: the level of Societal Safety and Security, the extent of Ongoing Domestic and International Conflict and the degree of Militarisation”, covering 99.7 per cent of the population worldwide.

GPI assigns nations a ranking between 1 and 5. The lower the score, the more peaceful the country is.

According to the list, Iceland is the safest country in the world, while Singapore ranks sixth. Another Asian country to have made it to the top 10 in Japan, ranking ninth, while Bhutan and Malaysia feature in the top 20, ranking 17th and 19th, respectively.

Iceland has consistently topped this list since 2008 owing to the low crime rate, less military spending and little international conflict. Placed second on the list, Denmark’s corruption rate is quite low. Third is Ireland, which has jumped five spots up since last year.

Singapore has been ranked sixth largely due to a low rate of crime, fewer international and internal conflicts as well as terrorism. Japan ranks ninth on the list due to less terrorism, less political instability, little international conflict and a comparatively lower rate of violence.
