Retirement is a significant life milestone. And if you are considering living out your golden years abroad, then factors such as cost of life, safety, and healthcare are probably at the top of your list. While countries such as Portugal and the Netherlands have recently been in the news as some of the most affordable places in Europe, according to Property Guides, a real estate assistance company, the most pocket-friendly place to retire is actually, Turkey.

Why Turkey is the best place to retire in Europe

The company’s data shows that retirees need, on average, 488 euros (USD 525.48) per month to live there. Located in southeastern Europe/southwestern Asia, the country is home to about 85 million people and has some of the lowest crime levels among any European country.

Turkey has also seen an impressive surge (70 per cent) in visitor numbers since the pandemic, according to a recent WTM Global Travel Report, making it the second most visited country on the Old Continent after France. This status has transformed it into a bustling meeting place of nations and a vibrant cultural destination, all factors that are important to expat retirees.

Istanbul, Antalya, and Bodrum are some of the most popular destinations with retirees in Turkey, according to Can Turken, chief operations officer of Türkiye Sotheby’s International Realty.

Istanbul has some of the most sought-after properties of all Türkiye, being the branded residences, villas, and waterfront properties. The amenities often range between recently renovated or new kitchens and bathrooms, private parking, indoor pools, sauna, and Turkish hammam,” Turken told T+L.

Antalya, a scenic resort city on the country’s Turquoise Coast on the Mediterranean, is home to sun-drenched beaches, restaurants, hotels, and a historic downtown with many Roman and Ottoman landmarks. Turken explained that the area’s almost year-round warm weather and the blend of its beautiful natural setting and urban amenities make it a popular choice, where seaside properties with hotel-style amenities are of the highest demand.

And Bodrum, the trendy luxury vacation spot on the Turkish Riviera, famous for its crystal-clear waters, high-end resorts, designer shopping, and chic eateries, is the top choice for retirees seeking exclusivity and privacy.

The second country on Property Guides’s list of best places to retire is Germany, for its many green spaces and the highest number of hospital beds available to its residents. And Greece is third, scoring high in affordability. You’ll need about USD 1,108 on average per month to cover your expenses in the Hellenic Republic, which also stands out with low crime levels.

How to Eat Your Way Through Tokyo Gluten-Freehttps://www.travelandleisureasia.com/global/tl-tastemakers/tastemakers-gluten-free-japanese-food-tokyo-dining-guide/2023-12-14T12:11:38+00:00https://www.travelandleisureasia.com/global/?p=149455Tokyo Gluten Free

IF YOU KNOW ANYTHING ABOUT Japanese cuisine (one of the world’s favorites!), you’ll know that, sadly for those with celiac disease or gluten intolerance, much of it is off limits due to the presence of gluten in many common Japanese ingredients. Notable among them: soy sauce, most types of noodles, and sometimes even sushi rice. So, on a recent trip to the Land of the Rising Sun, I took it as a delicious challenge to spend a week finding amazing Japanese food free of or with minimal gluten. Here’s my guide to dining gluten-free (GF for those in the know) in Tokyo.

Otsuna Sushi
Courtesy of Otsuna Sushi

Otsuna Sushi, located in the buzzing district of Roppongi, delivers a wonderful omakase for those avoiding gluten. While not a dedicated gluten-free establishment, with advanced notice the chef can prepare an outstanding tasting menu. Nearly all of the nigiri are adapted with GF soy, and anything that can’t be is replaced. Even the classic chawanmushi steamed egg and dessert were provided. Not too far away in Roppongi, Gluten Free T’s Kitchen offers a whole range of adaptable and allergen-free Japanese food. More than one visit may be required to sample the amount of comforting favorites on offer, including their fantastic deep fried chicken and takoyaki.

Gluten Free
FROM LEFT: Takoyaki, courtesy of Gluten Free T’s Kitchen; courtesy of Rizlabo Kitchen

Dreaming of jiggly, soft and fluffy soufflé pancakes? Situated in the achingly cool Jingumae district off Omotesando Street, Rizlabo Kitchen is here to deliver, ensuring you don’t miss out on this Instagram-required eating experience. The small kitchen is part of a shared restaurant space on the ground floor of a traditional Japanese house, and they also do crepes on certain weekdays – be sure to check their Insta for the latest. RICEHACK Gluten Free Bakery in the side streets of Cat Street, a small hole-in-the-wall operation, serves a range of delicious curry buns, sausage rolls, bread, baguettes and pizzas to-go (including vegetarian/vegan options); these make for excellent sustenance while touring Tokyo. And tucked away on a quiet lane off well-known Takeshita Street, My Bánh Mì by Gluten Free TOKYO offers a simple menu of sandwich options, also including vegetarian and vegan variations, with a small outdoor-dining terrace providing the perfect place for a light lunch.

Tokyo Restaurants
FROM LEFT: Courtesy of My Banh Mi; courtesy of Teppan Baby

Another fantastically popular Japanese dish is okonomiyaki, a type of savory pancake containing cabbage and various meat or seafood cooked on a teppan grill. Steps away from Shinjuku train station, the lively Teppan Baby specializes in Hokkaido-style okonomiyaki, which is cooked with yakisoba noodles as opposed to the more commonly found flour batter. While not suitable for celiacs due to the likelihood of cross-contamination, those with mild gluten intolerances may enjoy this dish as they are able to swap the yakisoba for rice noodles (cooked in a separate standalone pot of water).

Sû glutenfree kushi-age
Courtesy of Sû

The restaurant (a.k.a Gluten Free Kushiage Su, for googling purposes) in Ginza delivers an exceptional tasting menu of Kushiage, also known as Kushikatsu: skewers of breaded and deep-fried meat and vegetables. This modern and intimate eight-person restaurant is hard to find on the second floor of an anonymous building, however, it is truly unmissable on your gluten-free tour of Tokyo. Multiple courses of intriguing flavor combinations to start lead to wonderfully tender and crunchy sticks prepared before you and served at the counter.

Soranoiro NIPPON
Courtesy of Soranoiro NIPPON

Finally, for those craving the ultimate bowl of hearty goodness, Soranoiro NIPPON is conveniently placed at Tokyo Main Station to energize the weary traveler. Once you’ve located the establishment along “Ramen Street,” you can order from a machine outside the restaurant and choose a bowl of gluten free salt ramen; a deep broth with brown rice noodles, soft chicken breast, and a fudgy-yolked soft boiled egg. Slurping is highly encouraged!

In South Korea, Christmas is embraced as a romantic festival akin to Valentine’s Day. Couples seize the opportunity to spend quality time together and exchange heartfelt gifts. But don’t be misled; you can still find classic Christmas festivities in South Korea. Cities are decked up with Christmas trees and lights, and churches often host special events for the holiday season.

Savouring Centuries: A Tour Of Whiskey Distilleries That Defined The Crafthttps://www.travelandleisureasia.com/global/dining/drink/oldest-whiskey-distilleries-in-the-world/2023-12-14T07:00:14+00:00https://www.travelandleisureasia.com/global/?p=148846Whiskey distillery

From the rolling hills of Scotland to the verdant landscapes of Ireland, and from the rugged hills of Himachal Pradesh in India to the bourbon-loving heart of America, the oldest distilleries in the world have dedicated themselves to preserving the art of whiskey-making. These venerable establishments have not only withstood the test of time but have also weathered storms, all to create the intoxicating ‘amber nectar’.

Join us on a spirited journey through time, where expert craftsmanship and traditional distillation practices converge to produce some of the finest spirits known to humanity.

A toast to history: Discovering the world’s oldest whiskey distilleries

Bushmills, Ireland (1608)

Bushmills Ireland

The oldest licensed whiskey distillery in the world, Bushmills was established in 1608 in Northern Ireland. Famous for its exquisite single malt whiskey, the brand has won many accolades in global spirits competitions. Notably, it received the only gold medal ever awarded for whiskey at the Paris Expo of 1889. Bushmills sources water from the River Bush, flowing over basalt rocks, and uses malt barley in the production of its world-renowned whiskey.

Kilbeggan Distillery, Ireland (1757)

Founded by Matthew MacManus, Kilbeggan Distillery is one of the oldest in the world, with licence to distil since 1757. While facing financial challenges and temporarily ceasing operations in 1957, it resumed activities at its original site in 2007. Besides the Kilbeggan Small Batch Rye, made with traditional Irish ingredients, this distillery on River Brosna produces three notable brands: Kilbeggan, Locke’s Malt, and Locke’s Blend. In addition to its whiskey offerings, it features a restaurant, a fully-restored 19th-century waterwheel, and a steam engine to ensure operations even during the river’s low water levels.

Glenturret Distillery, Scotland (1763)

The Glenturret Distillery is the oldest working distillery in Perthshire, Scotland, and among the oldest whiskey distilleries in the world. Perched on the banks of River Turret, it was officially established in 1763. However, the site has a history of illicit distilling dating back to 1717. Despite changing ownership and facing closures during the First World War and US prohibition, Glenturrent persists as a bastion of whiskey craftsmanship. Glenturret uses water from the River Turret, the finest barley and ages its products to perfection in oak casks.

Bowmore Distillery, Scotland (1779)

One of the oldest distilleries in Scotland, Bowmore stands on the shores of Indaal Lake on the Isle of Islay. Despite changing ownership several times and facing closures in 1915 and 1925, it resumed operations in 1963 under new leadership and has thrived ever since. Among their notable offerings are the Bowmore 12, Bowmore The 50-Year-Old, and the super-smooth Bowmore 1957. Take a tour to know more.

Strathisla Distillery, Scotland (1786)

As the oldest continuously operating distillery in the Scottish Highlands, Strathisla Distillery, founded in 1786 as Milltown by Alexander Milne and George Taylor, remains an iconic presence. Now owned by the Chivas Bros, it sources water from The Broomhill Spring in Moray for its malt barley and ages its whiskey in used Bourbon casks for a smoother finish.

Balblair began releasing Vintage Whiskey in 2007, followed by the exclusive age-statement whiskeys aged 12, 15, 18, and 25 years.

Fly To Germany And Travel To 25 Different Cities By Train On One Ticket — Here's Howhttps://www.travelandleisureasia.com/global/uncategorized/fly-to-germany-and-travel-to-different-cities-by-train-on-one-ticket/2023-12-14T05:00:30+00:00https://www.travelandleisureasia.com/global/?p=149062Germany Travel

United Airlines is making it easier for travellers to hop a train in Europe by partnering with the Lufthansa Group and Deutsche Bahn to create a single ticket for both air and train travel.

The new partnership, which went into effect recently, will allow travellers flying through Frankfurt Airport to buy a single ticket that includes a train to continue onto 25 different cities in Germany as well as Basel, Switzerland, according to United. The integrated ticket will also have one fare that includes all legs of the trip.

All you need to know about the one ticket travel in Germany

“Connecting amazing places on both sides of the Atlantic has never been so easy,” Stefan Kreuzpaintner, the senior vice president of network, alliances and partnerships at Deutsche Lufthansa AG, said in a statement. “Together with our partners, we have consistently expanded our intermodal services in recent years in many European countries… It offers travellers to and from the USA a convenient, comfortable journey – a real premium product.”

Travellers who book one of these integrated tickets can receive the boarding pass for both their flight and train when checking in. They also have the possibility to access priority baggage handling and other services in the AiRail check-in area at Frankfurt Airport.

United MileagePlus members can also earn miles for the rail portion of their rail/air ticket, and eligible customers can access Deutsche Bahn lounges.

As an added perk, these tickets come with transfer and connection protection in the event of a delay or breakdown.

Trains are one of the easiest ways to get around Europe once you land with a large variety available from inter-city trains to larger lines like the Eurostar.

For its part, Deutsche Bahn operates more than 40,000 trains each day across 5,700 train stations. The company, along with its French counterpart, is also currently developing a high-speed connection between Paris and Berlin that would directly link the two major cities in 7 hours.
