Anuradhapura

The ancient city of Anuradhapura, a UNESCO World Heritage site, captivates with its size and collection of Buddhist temples, palaces, tanks and reservoirs. For over 1300 years it was the seat of power but disappeared into oblivion following an invasion in 993 till the British chanced upon the city in the 19th century. A big draw is the Sri Maha Bodhi tree said to have been planted from a cutting of the tree under which Gautama Buddha attained enlightenment. The tree has been tended to by a lineage of guardians for over 2000 years.

Kandy

Trincomalee

On the eastern edge of Sri Lanka, Trincomalee delights with its rich marine life, colonial fort and Hindu shrines. A natural harbour, the Portuguese built a fort here to control the area. The beaches around Trincomalee like Nilaveli Beach are as beautiful as those found on the southern coast of the country but far less crowded. Nearby Pigeon Island is a great spot to snorkel with many rock pools and shallow reefs. During March to August, Trincomalee’s waters are teeming with whales and several operators offer whale-watching trips.

Unravel the enchanting tales and practical insights that make Namche Bazaar in Nepal an indispensable chapter in the adventure to Everest Base Camp.

Teasing the skies at an altitude 3,440 metres, Namche Bazaar in Nepal is a tourist’s delight and a crucial stop for trekkers embarking on the Everest Base Camp Trek journey. It serves as a vital halt for acclimatisation, preparing trekkers for the higher altitudes and lower degrees that lie ahead.

Shaped like a horseshoe, this hilly settlement is a window to the snow-capped peaks and rich Sherpa culture. Tourists can rejoice in the multitude of bakehouses, three quaint museums, a stupa, as well as a variety of hotels and rustic lodges. In this story, we unravel the bazaar’s history, highlight key attractions, discuss essential document-based prerequisites, and more.

History of Namche Bazaar

Nestled in the Khumbu region, Namche Bazaar’s roots date back to the 15th century when it served as a trading post between Nepal and Tibet. Merchants would barter agricultural produce like yak milk and salt for rice, grains, tea, and wool. The turning point came in 1953 when Tenzing Norgay and Sir Edmund Hillary created history by scaling Mount Everest, bringing global attention to Namche Bazaar. This historic event unleashed a new era for the Sherpa capital, attracting an increasing number of trekkers, mountaineers, and tourists to the Bazaar. By and by, Namche Bazaar solidified its status as the gateway to Mt Everest, becoming the primary acclimatisation destination for those trekking to the Everest Base Camp or aiming to summit Everest. Today, Namche Bazaar has evolved into a buzzing tourist hub, featuring teahouses, hotels, pubs, and cyber cafes, all with a side of old-world Sherpa charm.

Namche Bazaar is the last town on the way to Everest Base Camp that has a formal market. From regional goods like carpets, pottery, and textiles to local produce like honey and yak cheese, the market has it all. Additionally, you can also replenish any missing trekking gear, stock up on snacks for the hike, and withdraw cash from the town’s ATM. Come weekend, Namche Bazaar makes way for the Saturday Market, where traders from Tibet and neighbouring villages display their goods and interact with customers. The vibrant ambience and appealing selection of items fuel the fervour. Tourists can also pick souvenirs and handicrafts from The Khumbu Art Gallery and Namche Bazaar Handicraft Center.

This museum enchants with 360-degree views of Mount Everest and the surrounding peaks. In addition to housing a bust of Tenzing Norgay, it also features several exhibits covering Sherpa culture, history, livelihood, and the geology of Namche Bazaar. We recommend visiting this museum in the morning when the weather is clear. Alongside lies Sagarmatha Next — a project undertaken by the Himalayan Museum and Sustainability Park to foster conscious consumption and waste management in the region.

The day hikes

Namche Bazaar offers a few side trips and short hikes that should be on every adventure-seeker’s radar. You can hike to Syangboche Hill (at an altitude of 3,450 metres) for panoramic views of Namche Bazaar, with Nuptse, Ama Dablam, Everest, and Lhotse in the background. The journey is roughly two hours long, dotted with rhododendrons and pine forests. Alternatively, you can trek to the twin Sherpa villages of Khumjung and Khunde to explore their sacred living and stony fields. If you seek something more challenging, hike to Hotel Everest View, located 3,962.4 metres above sea level. It featured in the Guinness Book of World Records (2004) as the highest-placed hotel in the world. Lastly, consider hiking to Thames Village, home to the Thames Monastery — the oldest monastery in the Khumbu region. This traditional village is also home to legendary Sherpas like Tenzing Norgay Sherpa, Appa Sherpa, and Ang Rita Sherpa.

Mount Everest Documentation Centre

The Mount Everest Documentation Centre is a repository of the history and culture of Nepal’s Khumbu region. The memorabilia and memoirs pay homage to Mount Everest, the Sherpa traditions, and the trekkers of the region. Visitors can look at the pictures and videos of Tenzing Norgay and Sir Edmund Hillary. The centre also exhibits pictures of Ang Rita Sherpa — the first man to summit Mount Everest, not once but ten times, without artificial oxygen.

Make your pint of Guinness count by having a swig at The Irish Pub — the highest Irish bar in the world. Tucked away at an altitude of  3,450 metres, it can be reached after a two-day trek through the Himalayas. Next, enjoy the rock, blues, and beer at the iconic Cafe Danphe. Named after the national bird of Nepal, this cafe flaunts T-shirts from Everest expeditions on its walls, Sherpa documentaries, Everest movies, a pool table, and delectable meals. Those with a sweet tooth must add the German bakery, called Hermann Helmers, to their itinerary. Other epicurean haunts worth visiting include Tomodachi Japanese Restaurant, Namche Bakery and Cafe, Illy Espresso Bar, Sherpa Barista, and Himalayan Java Coffee.

Things to know before visiting Namche Bazaar

Everest Base Camp

Namche Bazaar strikes the perfect balance between old-world charm and modern-day amenities, offering stellar phone and internet services. It also has hospitals for medical emergencies, including The Mountain Medical Institute, Khunde Hospital, and Namche Health Post. For an optimal experience, consider hiring an affable local guide, easily found through agencies like tourHQ and Alpine Ramble Treks, or in Lukla, a small town 27.5 km from Namche Bazaar.

As of April 1, 2023, Nepal has banned solo trekking for foreigners. To enter the Khumbu Rural Municipality and Sagarmatha National Park, all trekkers must obtain permits. The Everest Base Camp lies within the Sagarmatha National Park and can only be accessed with both the aforementioned permits. The Sagarmatha National Park permit costs USD 24 for foreigners and USD 12 for SAARC nationals, available at Monjo Checkpoint, trekking agencies in Kathmandu, the Department of National Parks and Wildlife Conservation in Kathmandu, and Nepal Tourism Board in Kathmandu.

The Khumbu Pasang Lhamu Rural Municipality Permit, costing USD 16, is issued by the local government and is mandatory for all trekkers visiting the Khumbu region, including Namche Bazaar, Dingboche, and Tengboche Obtain this permit at Khumbu Pasang Lhamu Rural Municipality Office in Lukla and Monjo Checkpoint at Sagarmatha National Park’s entry gate.

Namche Bazaar: Location and how to reach

Everest Base Camp

Located at an altitude of 3,440 metres, Nepal’s Namche Bazaar can be reached by flight, trekking, or even a helicopter ride. There are daily flights from Kathmandu to Lukla, about 27.5 km from Namche Bazaar.

The 35-minute flight, often on a small propeller-driven plane like a Dornier-228 or Twin Otter with just 15 seats, is a cherishable experience. The flight lands at the Tenzing-Hillary Airport (also called the Lukla Airport), touted to be among the most dangerous airports in the world. It has a single runway flanked by high terrain to the North and a steeply angled drop into the valley to the South.

Upon landing, begin your trek from Luka to Phakding, covering a straightforward 8 km. The next morning, embark on the journey from Phakding to Namche, a relatively challenging but fun route. Just short of Namche, you’ll reach Monjo, Sagarmatha National Park’s entry gate. Here, permits will be validated and fees for the park must be paid. Post this step, the soldiers of the Nepalese army will grant you entry into the region. Alternatively, tourists can also take a helicopter from Lukla to Namche Bazaar, based on the weather conditions.

Avid trekkers can also trek from Kathmandu to Namche Bazaar (about 137 km). Reach from Kathmandu to Jiri on an 8-hour bus ride. From there, embark on a 9-day trek, also called the Pioneer’s Route, to reach your destination.

Best time to visit Namche Bazaar Nepal

The best time to visit Namche Bazaar is between mid-March to May and between mid-September to December.

Among the most popular treks in Nepal, the Annapurna Base Camp trek attracts adventure enthusiasts from across the globe. If you want to embark on this journey of a lifetime, check out our complete guide to plan your trip.

All you need to know about the Annapurna Base Camp trek

The Annapurna Base Camp trek takes you through some breathtaking views of the mountains and valleys, including local flora and fauna, such as oak trees, rhododendron plantations, pine forests and rice fields. The route begins in Pokhara, a hill station located about 200 kilometres from Nepal’s capital, Kathmandu. From here, trekkers go up to Annapurna Base Camp and come back to Pokhara, to end their trek. The route goes up to an elevation of 13,549 feet (4,129 metres), from where views of the Annapurna Massif, Hiunchuli, Machhapuchhre and Annapurna South are a treat for sore eyes!

The total time this trek takes can take anywhere between seven to 12 days. It depends upon a lot of factors, such as your speed, whether you’re trekking alone or in a group, and which trekking group you’ve opted for (if you are booking one). However, if you are an experienced trekker, the route will not take you more than seven days to cover.

Though a moderate-difficult level trek, you can opt for the Annapurna Base Camp route if you are physically fit. However, any prior trekking experience will be an added benefit. If you have health issues or find it tough to climb heights, we’d recommend getting a clean bill of health from your doctor to avoid complications during the trip.

What a seven-day itinerary of the trek may look like for you

A rough itinerary (Pokhara-Annapurna Base Camp-Pokhara) for seven days will look like this:

Day 1: Pokhara to Nayapul to Ghandruk

pokhara

Begin your day early in the morning, and head to Nayapul from Pokhara. You can opt for local buses (which might get uncomfortably full if you are not used to crowds), or hail a cab to cover the distance. The views, however, are stunning and will make up for any discomfort you feel. Overall, to reach Nayapul, it will take two hours, and that’s including breakfast and bathroom breaks.

Once you are in Nayapul, begin your trek to Ghandruk. The first couple of hours of the walk will take you on dirt roads, which is a relatively easy journey as compared to what lies ahead. Soon after, you’ll ascend stairways and walk through mountain villages. The climb is gradual, but it can end up being a bit tiring. So, take ample rest at the many tea houses and rest stops along the way. The distance takes about six-seven hours to cover, and you’ll reach well in time to witness the slow village life before having your dinner and retiring for the night.

Day 2: Ghandruk to Chhomrong

Annapurna Base Camp

Wake up early and refresh yourself with the views that surround you. Eat well before you begin the climb for the day because you’ll need the energy to sustain yourself on the route. If the day is clear, you’ll see views of the ‘fishtail’ mountain (Machhapuchhre), Annapurna South, Hiunchuli and Gangapurna.

Keep in mind that leaving Ghandruk can be a bit confusing since the pathways are like a maze. So ask for directions and follow a map if you need to. The terrain that you’ll walk on Day 2 includes terraced fields, villages, rice plantations and quarries. It includes steep climbs and gradual descent, culminating in a relatively easy last leg of the day’s walk to Chhomrong. The village is a beautiful spot located in the lap of the Annapurna and is surrounded by magnificent scenery. The total walk for the day will be between six-eight hours.

Day 3: Chhomrong to Dovan

Even though you will probably be tired after hours of walking, we suggest waking up early to witness the beautiful sunrise at Chhomrong. The first rays of the sun cast a golden glow on the snow-capped mountains and will make for a memorable sight.

After a hearty breakfast, aim to leave Chhomrong before or around 8:00 am to complete the hike (roughly seven hours) before sunset. When you leave the village, you’ll have to present your permit at the checkpoint. From here, the first leg of the day’s journey is a relatively easy downhill trek. The tough section of this route will be the ascent to Sinuwa village. From here, the walk to the Bamboo forest will feel relatively easy on your fatigued body. The route will be complete with enchanting land covered with woody vegetation and hopefully clear skies (since it depends entirely on the weather). The final leg of the journey, which takes you from Bamboo to Dovan, is the toughest part of the day’s trek. The air will get noticeably thinner, so you will need to be careful about your health.

Day 4: Dovan to Machhapuchhre Base Camp to Annapurna Base Camp

Machhapuchhre Base Camp

Again, aim to get an early start to your day with a filling breakfast, because the trek on Day 4 will not be easy. Leave Dovan before 8:00 am and exit the village. The best part of this leg of the trek will be the views — not long after you leave, you will find yourself in a spectacular valley surrounded by towering peaks on all sides. You may also see snow on the ground if the weather is right.

Walk on terrains that lead you through routes with an emerald green river and rocky paths, which is magical as well as tough. You’ll be quite breathless by this time, so stop at Deurali to catch a break. Post that, resume your ascent towards Machhapuchhre Base Camp. It is here that you will get to see magnificent views of the Annapurna (8,091 metres) and Machhapuchhre (6,997 metres) mountains. Though the route is challenging, the views make up for all the fatigue. Take some rest and have lunch before you complete the final leg of the climb, which will take you to the Annapurna Base Camp.

Surrounded by breathtaking views of snow-capped peaks and deep valleys, you’ll be overwhelmed with emotions, especially joy. Explore around the base camp for a bit before you retire for the night at the base camp itself.

Day 5: Annapurna Base Camp to Sinuwa Village

This is when you bid a final goodbye to the Annapurna Base Camp, so be sure to wake up early and soak in the sunrise and mountain views around. It’ll be an otherworldly experience watching the sunrise while standing at the height of 4,129 metres. All the fatigue will vanish, and you will be set for the downhill journey that lies ahead.

After breakfast, start descending to the Machhapuchhre Base Camp. Depending on the weather, you could be met with either icy pathways and wind or clear skies and a cool breeze, so be prepared for everything. The walk is downhill until you reach Bamboo. From Bamboo, there is a steep ascent to Sinuwa. Here you will have to push yourself a bit, as once you are there, you can easily reach lower Sinuwa with a 20-minute walk. This last climb will make the following day easier. Once you reach the village, call it a day with a filling meal and restful sleep at one of the lodges in the place.

Day 6: Sinuwa to Chhomrong to Jhinu

Wake up to the beautiful views and enjoy your breakfast, because the walk will be much easier as compared to the last few days. Leave Sinuwa in the morning and begin your uphill climb to Chhomrong. From here, you’ll walk for 90 minutes towards Jhinu, where the hot springs will feel like heaven for your exhausted limbs!

Enjoy a filling dinner after walking around the area, and retire for the night. You’ll be refreshed for the final stretch of your walk the next day.

Day 7: Jhinu to Siwai to Pokhara

The journey this day will feel like a cakewalk after what you’ve been through over the rest of the week. Leave in the morning to walk towards Siwai, which is the final point of the trek. The walk should take between three to four hours.

Once in Siwai, board a bus or a taxi to reach Pokhara, where you can either spend the night or continue your journey back home.

Note: While this is a rough itinerary of what your seven-day journey will look like. The destinations you stop at may differ based on the trek group you’re opting for. Even if you’re travelling sans a group, you can modify the itinerary based on how much stamina you have to cover certain distances. You’ll still be able to reach Pokhara on the seventh day, as long as you maintain a steady pace throughout.

How much does the trek cost?

Depending upon the travel agent and/or the trek groups you book, the average cost of the trip begins at about INR 30,000.

Best time to visit the Annapurna Base Camp

The best times to go for the trek are October-November and April-May. This is because the weather conditions are generally dry and not too cold, making trekking a pleasant experience. The temperature range at the camp around this time will range between 16 degrees to 4 degrees, but it can go lower depending on the weather conditions.

How to reach Pokhara to begin the trek

By Air

Pokhara, which is the starting point of the trek, is connected to New Delhi (India) and Kathmandu (Nepal) by air.

Some Of The Best Things To Do In Sri Lanka That Should Be A Part Of Your Itineraryhttps://www.travelandleisureasia.com/global/destinations/south-asia/some-of-the-best-things-to-do-in-sri-lanka-that-should-be-a-part-of-your-itinerary/2023-09-06T07:00:43+00:00https://www.travelandleisureasia.com/global/?p=134246Things to do in Sri Lanka

The teardrop-shaped island off the eastern edge of India, Sri Lanka is a small nation that packs in a punch. From endless beaches, wildlife-rich national parks, tea plantations shrouded in mist, serene Buddhist temples, a colonial history spanning centuries and people whose smiles are as broad as the width of the country, Sri Lanka offers a mosaic of experiences suitable to all kinds of travellers.

Most people begin their journey from the capital city of Colombo before snaking out in different directions.

In Sri Lanka, it’s possible to do a beach, spiritual, cultural or adventure holiday, or one that combines a bit of everything. A fabulous network of roads means you can head out of Colombo’s broad avenues and get to the historic alleyways of Galle all in a matter of hours. If you’re after slow travel, jump onto a train that’s guaranteed to be a ride of a lifetime.

Sri Lanka being a tropical country, is hot and humid year round. While seasonal rains bring the temperatures down they drive up the humidity.

Best free thing to do

Stroll through the alleyways of Galle

The UNESCO World Heritage Site of Galle is one of the island nation’s biggest draws. Ruled by the Portuguese, Dutch and British, time slows down within the impenetrable ramparts of this erstwhile trading port. Armed with a map walk down its narrow streets packed with quirky boutiques, wonderfully restored heritage hotels and museums.

Things to do in Galle

Take a deep dive into Galle‘s history at the Maritime Archaeological Museum housed in a spice warehouse. Exhibits give viewers a glimpse into the many shipwrecks and treasures that lie buried under the sea around the fort.

For a taste of the glory days of the fort settle down with an arrack (a local tipple) cocktail at the atmospheric Galle Fort Hotel whose foundations date back over 400 years. Closer to sunset find a spot on the ramparts and join the locals for a theatrical sunset. If hunger strikes make a beeline for the carts selling hot vadais.

Best thing to do at night

Go on a bicycle tour through Colombo

Get a crash course on Colombo’s historical and cultural landmarks on a unique nighttime cycling tour. Just show up at the designated spot and follow a guide pedalling down the city’s roads past the stately Independence Square, the ornate Gangaramaya Temple, the Dutch Hospital Precinct and delight in the ocean breeze at Galle Face Green: the city’s beloved ocean-facing patch of green.

With ample stops to catch your breath and a refreshment at the end, this ride is far from daunting and is a wonderful way to see dusk cloak Colombo and the city lights come on as darkness descends.

Best for wildlife enthusiasts

Come face-to-face with leopards at Yala National Park

Things to do in Sri Lanka

Verdant forests give way to scrubland around Yala National Park on the south-eastern coast of Sri Lanka. Spread across 130,000 hectares and split into five blocks, only two are open to visitors. Hiding between enormous boulders, around lagoons and in the vegetation, are an astonishingly high number of leopards. But besides the elusive cat, Yala offers many prized sightings including elephants, crocodiles, peacocks, monitor lizards, monkeys and the rare sloth bear.

Fringing the coast, Yala’s unique location means you can spend the morning in the jungle and watch the sunset on the beach all on the same day.

Best thing to do with family and kids

Enjoy island life in Mirissa

A palm-fringed crescent-shaped beach, Mirissa, is popular with families and young adults. Depending on the time of the year, the Indian Ocean may be a tempestuous beast or calm like a mirror’s surface, but it’s nevertheless a sight to behold either way.

The handful of shacks by the beach tick all the boxes namely: provide beach chairs, serve food and drinks, and with nightfall display fresh seafood to entice passersby. A few like Zouk even give out boogie boards for free. Those who want to take serious surf lessons can find a surf school near Weligama a short drive away.

From January to April, Mirissa is a fantastic spot to snorkel. If you’re lucky, have turtles swim past you. For a one-of-a-kind experience go on an early morning whale-watching tour to see majestic blue whales.

Best active thing to do

Go on the newly launched Pekoe Trail

Curious to learn about the history of Ceylon Tea and how it shaped the island nation, then tighten your shoelaces and get walking on the newly launched Pekoe Trail that winds its way through the central highlands of Sri Lanka covering over 300 kilometres.

Divided into 22 stages stretching from Kandy to Nuwara Eilya through Haputale, Hatton and Ella, attempt to do the entire path or a section of it depending on your time and interest. Championing slow and immersive travel, the trail gives travellers a unique insight into varying terrains, and local customs and throws up ample opportunities to interact with communities living along the route.

Best for history buffs

Explore the ruins of Dambulla, Sigiriya and Anuradhapura

Things to do in Sri Lanka

A long reign of Sinhalese dynasties have left their indelible mark on Sri Lanka as seen through restored ruins, art-filled caves, stupas and more, across the central plains of the country. The interiors of the Royal Rock Temple of Dambulla shines with colourful frescoes and life-size Buddha statues. Of all of Sri Lanka’s cultural riches, the towering rock fortress of Sigiriya is particularly striking.

Surrounded by landscaped gardens and rock pools, follow the crowds and make your way up to the top of the rock while listening to stories of how King Kashyapa created and set up his capital in the midst of a thick, impenetrable jungle. If Sigiriya stuns with its vertical scale, Anuradhapura impresses with its sprawl. Considered to be the first planned city of ancient Sri Lanka, Anuradhapura boasts a massive collection of palaces, Buddhist temples, reservoirs and tanks.

Best to enjoy slow travel

Take the train from Ella to Kandy over the Nine Arches Bridge

Hop aboard the famous blue train that funnels through iridescent green tea gardens, past cascading waterfalls, over seemingly never-ending valleys and across the Nine Arches Bridge: a visual spectacle that makes all the time and effort put into the journey worth it. Considered to be one of the most beautiful train journeys in the world, it does see large numbers, so avoid the crowds by travelling from Ella to Kandy and not the other way round.

Also, buy tickets in advance to make sure you have seats as the journey can stretch upwards of seven hours. With the basics taken care of, sit back, buy food and tea from the passing vendors and enjoy a truly resplendent Sri Lanka.

Best offbeat thing to do

Discover Sri Lanka’s little-known northern part with a visit to Jaffna

Jaffna on the remote northern tip of Sri Lanka offers several fine experiences for the few who make the journey there. Signs of a long-drawn war are visible everywhere but the people of Jaffna are happy to welcome visitors to their corner of the island. Rainbow-coloured temples, clear waters, colonial buildings and a highly nuanced Tamil culture are a definite highlight.

Of its many temples, the Nallur Kandaswamy Temple dedicated to Lord Murugan stands out with its distinct red and white striped wall and large tank within. The Nallur Festival which takes place in August is a visual extravaganza spread over 25 days. While in Jaffna don’t leave without having a taste of a Jaffna Thali known for its liberal use of seafood and spices.

Best festival to attend

Come July/August and the streets of Kandy burst to life with colour, music and religious gusto. The perahera meaning procession is carried out to honour Buddha’s sacred tooth that’s enshrined in a golden stupa in the Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic. The 10-day festival held to seek divine blessings for a good harvest concludes on a full moon night or nikini poya.

A highlight of the celebrations are marching flag bearers, elephants wearing elaborate costumes, acrobats and Kandyan dancers who keep pace with high-octane drummers. To enjoy the spectacle make sure to buy tickets that come with a ringside view of the procession well in advance. The festival is the largest of many such celebrations held across the country throughout the year and is hugely popular.

Take a deep dive into Colombo

Things to do in Sri Lanka

Capital city Colombo entices in many ways: offering a slice of island life, with its ever-evolving dining and shopping scene, by providing a glimpse into Sri Lanka’s multi-layered cultural and religious life and with its wealth of colonial buildings and charm.

Get acquainted with the country’s history at the statuesque Colombo National Museum worth a visit both for its stately Italian architecture as well as for the wealth of treasures inside. Catch your breath at Viharamahadevi Park with its sprawling expanse and abundant flowering trees. At dusk make your way to Galle Face Green, the city’s beloved public green space beside the ocean and delight in the simple pleasures of flying a kite or walking on the promenade feasting on a variety of local deep-fried snacks.

In a city with many dining options, the most sought-after is a meal at the Ministry of Crab, a restaurant set in the buzzy colonial-era Dutch Hospital building and owned by former Sri Lankan cricketing heroes.

Additionally, there’s a lot to explore in this part of Sri Lanka’s western province that’ll make your holiday a memory to cherish.

How to plan a Colombo trip?

Planning a trip to any new destination requires adequate research in advance — be it in terms of flights, accommodation bookings and visa requirements or the places to visit. For your trip to Colombo, decide on the season you’d be visiting, finalise the dates and book your flight tickets.

Start planning your itinerary while considering the mode of transportation you’d be using, the cuisines you’d like to try and the activities and things you’d want to indulge in. While booking hotels, try choosing properties that make travelling to different tourist spots convenient in terms of time and distance.

Colombo weather and the best time to visit

December to February makes for the best time to visit since the weather is usually sunny and pleasant to even indulge in outdoor activities.

The months between April and October are for monsoons with June to September being the wettest months. Tourist footfall during this season is relatively low. The months of March and April are hot and dry, making outdoor excursions and exploring the city difficult and uncomfortable. However, you may be able to snag good deals on flights and hotel bookings.

How to reach Colombo

Taking a flight to the Bandaranaike International Airport (Colombo Airport) situated in Katunayake is one of the best ways to reach the city. The airport is connected to almost all major flights and is an hour’s drive from Colombo.

Whether you wish to try authentic, local Sinhalese street food or indulge in a fine-dining continental spread, this city will never leave you disappointed. Some of the most prominent dishes that you must try when in Colombo include:

Lamprais — originating from the Dutch Burgher Community is a rice dish that involves cooking rice with meat stock, mixed meat curry, brinjal, seeni sambol, meatballs and shrimp paste and then wrapping it in a banana leaf and baking it.

Rice and curry — a signature dish in the country that includes rice served with different vegetarian or non-vegetarian curries along with papadams, mallung and pol sambol on the side.

Vitamin Sea: How the Open Ocean Solved One Writer’s Pandemic Woeshttps://www.travelandleisureasia.com/global/trips/beaches-and-islands/swimsuit-required-health-benefits-of-the-ocean-healing-power-of-beaches/2023-05-23T03:30:25+00:00https://www.travelandleisureasia.com/global/?p=116426health benefits of the ocean

There are tangible health benefits to ocean water and sea air – for your skin, thyroid, pain relief… and, perhaps most relevant to the age of covid, your respiratory system and stress. While it may seem like ages since most of us were locked behind closed borders, some, like the residents of Hong Kong, lived under pandemic restrictions until much more recently. For one of our writers, who only made his first international escape a year ago, the priority was life-giving water and wide-open beaches in their varied forms all over the world. His tale of rejuvenation via vitamin sea will likely resonate with us all. Read on for our homage to the healing power of beaches

SIX HUNDRED AND FIFTY-EIGHT DAYS. That was the time between flights during the darkest days of covid-19, the longest I had waited to get on a plane in decades. You could leave Hong Kong (and many did, for good), but faced prohibitive quarantine measures on return.

healing sea water

Yet, I had to escape, quarantine be damned. Like many others, I yearned for wide open spaces and sought beaches and water – cleansing, calming, healing, rejuvenating, life-giving sea water, the power of the waves, and the perfect antidote to the pandemic.

First stop, Australia to see family and friends. Hong Kong airport was ghostly quiet, the flight mostly empty and my emotions a mix of anxiety and relief. There may even have been tears. Arriving in Sydney, I was greeted by the scent of freedom and salt in the air on my home turf of Bondi Beach.

A summer day’s at the Bondi Icebergs Club, Bondi Beach

Australia’s most famous beach is a kilometer-long crescent of soft golden sand where posing and people-watching is de rigueur. For the uninitiated, it’s surfers and backpackers at the south end, a multicultural melting pot in the middle, families and LGBTQ+ cliques north, and eye candy all around. The cliff-hugging, six-kilometer-long Bondi to Coogee walk is one of the world’s great coastal trails and shouldn’t be missed.

Phillip Island

Next came Phuket, one of the first places in Asia to reopen to international travelers. It was May 2022, and the island was surprisingly busy, despite the paperwork and testing requirements and the absence of Russian and Chinese tourists.

I luxuriated at three resorts near the ocean, including the secluded Anantara Layan, and the family-friendly Banyan Tree, where health and spa are practically standard among the benefits, like breakfast. My favorite, Paresa, featured pool villas all with stunning sea and sunset views. (I’m returning to Phuket this month to check into the much talked-about new V Villas in the island’s south.)

Wanderlust reignited, I sought out faraway lands and unfamiliar cultures, landing in little-visited Mozambique. Its star attraction, the Bazaruto Archipelago, is blessed with pristine waters, plentiful coral and marine life, and a spectacular tidal phenomenon that creates miles of sandbanks that must be seen to be believed.

Remote as it is, the accommodation is excellent, as is the seafood. Robinson Crusoe would have cried at the comforts at andBeyond Benguerra Island, with its beachfront casinhas serviced by friendly butlers. Even more upscale is the staggering new Kisawa Sanctuary, where each of the 11 ultra-stylish bungalows is set on an acre plot sheltered by undulating dunes.

W Maldives and JW Marriott Maldives
FROM LEFT: Courtesy of W Maldives; courtesy of JW Marriott Maldives

Then it was off to the Maldives, which remained open throughout much of the pandemic. The initial shock of seeing the scale of new development, with entire islands being built, ebbed as my seaplane flew over atolls and turquoise ocean. I swam with a whale shark while staying at the W and saw manta rays from my villa deck at the JW Marriott. I can’t wait to return to the Maldives this month to try out Mirihi, with a tantalizing possibility of more whale shark sightings.

Nearby, my beloved Sri Lanka. The teardrop-shaped isle was on the brink of collapse last year before making a tentative recovery, and I wanted to see how it was faring. I toured the stunning tea country and down to UNESCO-protected Galle, where I stayed at Fort Bazaar and swam with locals at the base of the centuries-old fort. What struck me was the resilience in the face of adversity and the unfailing hospitality of people happy to see the return of tourism.

Kumu Beach
Courtesy of Kumu Beach

Towards the end of my trip, at Kumu Beach, a special encounter. On an otherwise deserted beach, two monks in tangerine robes clamber on giant granite boulders for photos. They change and enter the sea. Instead of fearing the waves, they laugh joyfully, their cares carried away by the tumbling surf.

Everyone from NIH to PADI has reported on the health benefits of the ocean, for immunity, circulation, mental health and much more. Little wonder we all could probably write our own love letter to beaches.

The Most Surprisingly Stunning Seaside Spots in Asia to Watch Both Sunrise and Sunsethttps://www.travelandleisureasia.com/global/destinations/the-most-surprisingly-stunning-seaside-spots-in-asia-to-watch-both-sunrise-and-sunset/2023-02-06T05:45:15+00:00https://www.travelandleisureasia.com/global/?p=7604Ha Long Bay, Vietnam

Which is best, east or west? No need to pick if you head to one of these destinations where you can watch both sunrise and sunset in all their golden-hour glory.

THE GOLDEN HOURS ARE SPECIAL, particularly over the water. So special, in fact, that smart resorts market their rooms—or indeed, whole properties—by which direction they face, knowing that early risers might prefer a completely different view from sundowner-sippers. But what of us who want to watch both sunrise and sunset? Who want a little dawn yoga and dusky romance in our lives? It’s a harder ask than you might think, what with directions determining things and all. No matter how much we fit into our (holi) days, there’s only ever a select hour or so per day to watch that golden orb rise or fall—and being mindful of the passage of time, whether you mark it with a rousing ritual or simple silent reflection, is an easy way to conjure awe in our lives. Just ask Instagram.

We’re created this list so you can have it all. Here are 4 idyllic seaside places across Asia where you can watch both sunrise and sunset. The selections might surprise you… and they’ll definitely delight.

Romblon Island, Philippines

Home to some 7,600 islands, all in gorgeous tropical waters, the Philippines ensures no shortage of shoreline spots to watch both sunrise and sunset. But perhaps you’ve never heard of this one.

An overnight ferry ride off the southern tip of Luzon chugs you to the small island of Romblon—one of those rare spots in the Philippines that hits that harmonious balance between tourism, industry, and traditional life where all thrive without negatively affecting each other. Renown in the art world for its abundance of Italian-quality marble, quarried and often hand-crafted on-site (from palm-sized animal sculptures to fountains and entire rocking chairs), this island is a draw for its architecture, white sand beaches and pristine jungles.

Most importantly, Romblon is at the tip of the Verde Island Passage, known as the center of the center of marine biodiversity, so the place has many mind-blowing dive sites. Prime example: Romblon is home to the Philippines’ only known blue hole—a large marine sinkhole that’s a stunning natural phenomenon.

For sunup, the islets of Casing and Bagasina look out directly over Lio Bay, with the deep offshore waters offering a pastel of morning light reflections. Bon Bon Beach, with an expansive pure white sandbar, faces into the sunset, and while it offers little in the way of hotels or beach bars, the serenity and beauty of this place are far superior to anything manmade. At low tide, you can walk over to the uninhabited island of Bang-og, but make sure you head back before the tide comes in.

Kuakata Beach, Bangladesh

Way off the beaten tourist trail is Bangladesh’s Kuakata Beach. An 18-kilometer strip of sand that, thanks to its angle, and location at the southernmost tip of the country, enables you to watch both sunrise and sunset over the Bay of Bengal.

Home to more traditional fishing boats and fishermen than hawkers, this area is locally known as Sagar Kannya (“daughter of the sea”). A wide, sandy beach dotted with palm trees makes for a relaxing spot to kick back and view nature’s finest moments.

Just a quick boat ride off the eastern end of the beach brings you to Crab Island, a secluded sanctuary for tens of thousands of red crabs. Kuakata Beach is surrounded by Gajmati Reserve forests to the east—home to a wide variety of migratory birds, monkeys and even wild chickens—and the Kuakata woodlands to the west.

There are no hotels beachside, but the Hotel Graver Inn has a range of rooms starting from US$58, and is a five-minute stroll from the beach.

Ha Long Bay, Vietnam

UNESCO World Heritage site Ha Long Bay, with more than 2,000 limestone islands, is a tourism mecca in Asia, and deservedly so. The best way to avoid the bustle is to dodge the day trips and do a two-night cruise. This will allow you to take in clusters of islands too far for day-trippers or overnighters to get to, and allow you to surrender to the rhythms of the sea and the sun.

Once afloat you can watch both sunrise and sunset from the deck—its ascent over the Gulf of Tonkin and denouement behind the slew of islands, bays and iconic limestone outcrops. Then wait a while longer… because it’s the blue hour, that twilight time between dusk and darkness, when the locals believe Ha Long Bay is at its most beautiful.

Check out HalongJunkCruise, which offers a variety of boats, budgets, and schedules; two-night cruises from US$94 to US$728 per person, based on double occupancy.

Kenting, Taiwan

Taiwan’s southern Hengchun Peninsula is home to a large national park, a historic lighthouse, a vibrant night market, and a host of palm-dotted beaches.

Known locally as the Breezy Peninsula, it’s always pleasantly a couple of degrees cooler than the rest of the country in summer, and warmer throughout winter. Hosting numerous dive sites and clear-water swimming spots, it’s an easy place to watch both sunrise and sunset, simply by going from one side of the cape to the other.

For daybreak, the cliffs overlooking the Pacific, at Longpan Park—and the beach of Fengchuisha, two minutes down the road—are your best spots to start the day. Once the sun pops up, you can see clear to the low mountain range of the southern interior too.

To witness the sun slip into the ocean on the other side of the headland, you’ve got a couple of stunning options. Both the golden sands of Baisha Beach (used as a filming location for Life of Pi) and the hillside area of Guanshan, dotted with cafes—specifically set up for sunset viewing—will serve you right.

Taiwan’s southern cape has a host of things to see; just have a look here.
